Microsoft Edge 89 update available

New features include startup boost and vertical tabs.

The new Microsoft Edge 89.0.774.45 is available and offers some new features. This includes the tabs displayed vertically optionally.

Microsoft released a major update of the Edge browser and it includes various new features. Microsoft Edge 89 will be installed via the update function integrated in Edge.

Vertical tabs

In Edge, the tabs can now be arranged vertically on the left side. This can provide a better overview when multiple tabs are open and the tab title can hardly be seen in the traditional horizontal tab arrangement. The vertical tabs are already available in Opera, Chrome, Firefox or Vivaldi.

Users can activate the vertical tab view via the corresponding icon on the left in the tab bar. Alternatively, users can right-click on a tab register and then select the entry Activate vertical tabs in the context menu.

Startup boost makes Microsoft Edge launch more quickly

This innovation accelerates the start of Edge between 29% and to 41%, which is significant. The function is activated in the browser settings under System. Startup boost is active by default and can also be deactivated again using the corresponding switch.

The browser now starts in the background as soon as the user logs on to the device. Edge also continues to run even if the user has closed all browser windows. The developers emphasize that Edge only uses minimal computer resources in the background because all unnecessary processes are terminated and are only reactivated when the user is surfing the web with Edge. Startup boost is available on Windows devices that have at least 4 gigabyte of RAM and a modern hard drive or an SSD.
