Thunderbird 153.0 and 140.13 ESR Released
The update ships new features and a long list of bug fixes.
Mozilla has finalized Thunderbird 153.0, released alongside Firefox 153. This update also marks the start of the new 153 ESR branch. The outgoing 140 ESR branch gets a final security refresh today as 140.13, and will continue to be supported until mid-September, when 153 ESR takes over as the sole Extended Support Release.
All three versions include security fixes. Thunderbird 153 additionally ships new features and a long list of bug fixes.
New in Thunderbird 153
- Unified folders now show a color indicator for the account, with a tooltip revealing the account name
- OAuth sign-in for email accounts now opens in your default web browser instead of an embedded window
- Thundermail services can now be used without installing an add-on
- OAuth responses now validate issuer fields and reject ones missing a required issuer
Selected fixes
- Fixed PDF attachments opened in Thunderbird tabs not saving with Ctrl+S
- TLS errors no longer incorrectly reported as untrusted-certificate errors
- Several crashes fixed
- Fixed inbox and other mailbox files being deleted during old IMAP profile migration
- Spacebar now scrolls PDF attachments opened from emails
- Fixed IMAP tag removal sometimes failing, with tags reappearing after a refresh
- Numeric subfolders now sort in natural order instead of alphabetically
- Virtual folders now retain their online-search setting
- Fixed a performance issue when decrypting encrypted messages
- Multiple OpenPGP issues resolved
- Esc no longer clears the quick-filter marker after switching folders
- Dragging an email address between compose windows now correctly adds it as a recipient
- The "Send Message" dialog no longer gets stuck at "Filter done" after a successful send
- Composing with PDF attachments no longer opens the PDFs instead of creating a new message
- Ctrl+Enter now sends the message instead of opening the attachment
- The compose window no longer stays open when delayed send is enabled
- Fixed Thunderbird sometimes failing to quit properly during active OAuth requests
- Multiple selected IMAP folders can now be moved or deleted together
- Message tags are no longer lost when moving a folder from local storage into an IMAP folder
Highlights for users upgrading from 140 ESR to 153 ESR
Since this jumps several versions of new-feature work, the list for ESR users is long:
- PDF attachments opened in Thunderbird can now be signed with visual signatures
- "Copy Message Link" and "Copy News Link" added under "More Actions"
- Accessibility improvements across various tree views
- "Archive" action added to email notifications
- "Show Full Path" option for the folder pane in compact view modes
- Folder copying enabled within mail accounts and local folders
- "Reset Folder Order" option to undo custom folder sorting
