Chrome 155 Closes 37 Security Holes, Seven of Them Rated Critical
Your browser is open right now, so this is the update to take five minutes for: Chrome 155 is rolling out with a long list of memory-safety fixes.
You know the drill: a little arrow turns green in the corner of Chrome, you tell yourself you'll relaunch later, and three weeks go by. This time it's worth acting sooner. Google pushed Chrome 155 to the stable channel on 13 October 2026, and the Windows build is 155.0.8059.79/.80. The release is staggered, so it reaches everyone over the coming days and weeks.
A security-heavy release
The headline is the sheer count: 37 security fixes, of which seven are classed Critical, 29 High and one Medium. Most of the Critical ones are use-after-free bugs, the kind of flaw where the browser keeps using memory it has already handed back. They sit in places you touch every minute of the day: the browser core itself, the network stack, media playback, SVG rendering and the built-in PDF viewer. A seventh Critical bug is a buffer overflow in ANGLE, the layer that translates web graphics for your GPU.
Several of the reports came from Google's own researchers, others from outside finders, which is the normal pattern for a big Chrome cycle. Google keeps bug details restricted until most people have updated, so don't read much into the sparse descriptions; the severity labels are the signal.
How to get it
Chrome updates itself in the background, but a pending update only applies after a restart. Open the three-dot menu, go to Help and About Google Chrome, and let it check; the version number should start with 155. If you keep dozens of tabs open, Chrome will restore them after the relaunch.
Our verdict
Anyone who uses Chrome for banking, email or shopping should treat this as a same-day update. With that many Critical-rated flaws in rendering, networking and PDF handling, a drive-by web page is exactly the kind of attack surface this release shrinks. People who run Chrome-based browsers such as Edge, Brave or Vivaldi should also watch for their own matching updates, since these fixes usually travel downstream.
