Mozilla released Firefox 97.0, Firefox ESR 91.6.0 as well as the new Thunderbird 91.6.0. The developers have eliminated security vulnerabilities and other bugs and there are no major innovations available this time. The color schemes supplied with Firefox 94 are no longer available, but there are new ones.
The Firefox 97 update fixes more than 12 security vulnerabilities according to Mozilla, of which Mozilla rates at least four as high risk. One of them affects the Mozilla Update service on Windows. A user could use it to obtain write permissions in any directory and ultimately obtain system permissions. Additional vulnerabilities could lead to an application crash, where injected code could be executed.
The additional color schemes that were explicitly shipped with Firefox 94 for a limited time will be removed again with Firefox 97. If you had activated one of them before, you can keep it. Mozilla includes six new color schemes with such nice names as Rawrrr!, Cheese Puff or Bomb-dot-com. These will also not be available permanently. In addition, Firefox now supports and uses the new Windows 11 style for scrollbars.
You can read more about the new version 97.0 in the Release Notes.
The Firefox ESR 91.6.0 update closes more than eight vulnerabilities, at least three of which are considered high risk. These are essentially the same vulnerabilities fixed in Firefox 97.
The new Thunderbird version 91.6.0 eliminates the vulnerabilities that the Firefox ESR mail program inherited. Its code is used, among other things, for HTML processing. The only new feature in Thunderbird 91.6 is the ability to send large file attachments via FileLink.
If you have already installed Firefox, it is best to use the update function integrated in Firefox. This will automatically provide you with the update Firefox 97 as soon as it is available for your Firefox.
