Brave 1.96.59 Brings Math Rendering to Leo, a Wallet Popup, and Chromium 154

Brave has released version 1.96.59 of its privacy-focused desktop browser for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The update moves the browser onto Chromium 154, adds proper math rendering to the built-in Leo AI assistant, and closes a couple of security gaps, along with a long list of fixes.
What's New
Math rendering in Leo — Leo now displays equations in proper mathematical notation instead of raw text, which makes answers to math, science, and engineering questions much easier to read.
Wallet transactions in a popup — Brave Wallet now opens transaction confirmations in a popup window instead of the side panel. It also validates Solana mint addresses before fetching NFT data, cutting down on errors.
Screenshot preview — The built-in screenshot tool now shows a preview before you save, and it has moved from the Share menu to the Save menu.
Memory settings — The Memory settings page now lists which sites you have set to always stay active, so they're easier to review.
Refreshed VPN onboarding — The Brave VPN setup screens have been redesigned.
Security Fixes
- Widevine (the DRM component) is now disabled in Tor windows, reducing the fingerprinting surface in private Tor browsing.
- HTTPS is now enforced during installation. This issue was reported by researcher "newfunction" through HackerOne.
- The upgrade to Chromium 154.0.8037.58 pulls in the latest upstream Chromium security patches.
Bug Fixes
- Fixed a renderer crash related to UserMediaElement
- Calculations in the address bar are no longer cut off
- The search-suggestions toggle now stays set after a restart
- Editing startup pages works properly again
- Desktop shortcuts show the correct Brave icon
- Vertical tabs: hover cards display correctly, and tab group positioning is fixed
- Picture-in-Picture windows are identified correctly on Linux
- Better image rendering for Brave News in the side panel
For most Windows users the Chromium 154 upgrade is the main reason to update, since it brings the browser's security patches up to date. Leo's math rendering and the screenshot preview are small but useful improvements if you use those features.
