XYplorer 28.40.0300 Released

A Fresh Build for Windows' Favorite Power-User File Manager.

XYplorer, the long-running tabbed file manager for Windows, has been updated to version 28.40.0300. A parallel maintenance build, 27.20.1600, was released for users still on the previous branch. The developer, Cologne Code Company, publishes a detailed changelog on its website, so check there for the specifics of this build.

Why XYplorer stays popular

Windows File Explorer is fine for casual use, but anyone who moves, compares and organizes large numbers of files tends to hit its limits quickly. XYplorer is built for exactly those people. Its main strengths include:

  • Tabbed browsing. Open multiple folders in tabs and save tab sets so that your working context can be restored at any time.
  • Optional dual-pane layout. Show two folders side by side to copy, move or compare without juggling windows.
  • Integrated previews. View images, documents and media without launching other programs.
  • Advanced search. Combine Boolean logic and regular expressions to find files precisely, with a built-in duplicate finder for cleanup jobs.
  • Scripting. A native scripting language automates repetitive work and batch operations.
  • Customization. Dark mode, user-definable columns, metadata tagging and a highly adjustable interface.
  • Portability. It runs without installation, so it can live on a USB stick and travel with you.
  • Queued file operations. Large transfers line up rather than fighting each other for disk bandwidth.

Licensing

XYplorer is distributed as a fully functional 30-day free trial. After that you can choose a Standard license, a Lifetime license that includes free upgrades, or volume and site licenses. A portable version is available. The download is small, around 1.6 MB.

Who should try it

Technicians, power users, photographers with big libraries and anyone who regularly reorganizes folders will probably get the most from it. If you are happy with Explorer, nothing here will change your mind, but if you often wish for tabs, dual panes and scripting, it is worth the trial period.

Practical advice

  • Back up your settings folder, or use the portable edition, before updating a heavily customized setup.
  • Read the changelog for behavior changes if you rely on custom scripts.
  • Use the trial to test your real workflow, such as search and batch rename, before deciding on a license type.
