The first security update of the new year for Chrome eliminates several vulnerabilities in the Chrome browser.

On January 7, Google released the new Chrome versions Chrome 131.0.6778.264/265 for Windows and macOS and 131.0.6778.264 for Linux. With these updates, Google's developers are closing four security vulnerabilities in the browser that, according to Google, have not yet been exploited for attacks. The manufacturers of other Chromium-based browsers will follow suit shortly.

The Chrome Release Blog lists only one of the four security vulnerabilities that have been closed, which was discovered by external security researchers and reported to Google. Google classifies this vulnerability as high risk. CVE-2025-0291 is once again a type confusion in the Javascript engine V8.

Google Chrome is currently available in versions 131.0.6778.260 for Android, 131.0.6778.264 for Linux and 131.0.6778.264/.265 for macOS and Linux; the long-term support version Extended Stable has the new version 130.0.6723.191.

Chrome usually updates itself automatically when a new version is available. You can manually start the update check using the menu entry » Help » About Google Chrome.
