Security updates for Chromium-based browsers available
Google has released a security update for Chrome 83. Microsoft quickly followed suit and also updated its browser edge, as did Brave.
David FischerWith the new Chrome version 83.0.4103.112 for Windows, macOS and Linux Google developers have fixed some security vulnerabilities. The Chrome Release Blog lists three vulnerabilities for update version 106 which were discovered by external security researchers and reported to Google. Google classifies all three as high risk. Google rewarded the reports with a bonus of $15,000 each for the discovery of vulnerabilities CVE-2020-6505 and CVE-2020-6506.
Microsoft updated its Edge (Chromium-based) browser already to address the same vulnerabilities. The latest version is number 83.0.478.53. Microsoft wants to distribute Edge (Chromium-based) in the near future via Windows Update to all Windows 10 computers. So far, switching from Edge (EdgeHTML) to Edge (Chromium-based) is still optional.
The latest version 1.10.93 of the Brave browser is also already updated using Chromium 83.0.4103.106. Vivaldi 3.1.1929.34 is still based on Chromium 83.0.4103.98. Opera (current version: 68.0.3618.165) has still not made the switch from Chromium 81 to Chromium 83, but the corresponding beta versions still show the progress.
Desktop users can check manually for the available update and install the update right away. The browser should display version 83.0.4103.112 after the update has been installed on the About Chrome page. Don't forget to restart the browser to complete the update process!
