Microsoft has released a major update for Windows 11 with KB5034848
This is a huge update with many new features for Copilot, photos and more. But you have to take action yourself if you want to receive the innovations immediately.
David FischerMicrosoft has introduced many new features for Windows 11 (Windows 11 22H2 and Windows 11 23H2) with the Moment 5 update (KB5034848). Some of the new features are the new Copilot control updates and the ability to use your Android phone as a webcam.
The Moment 5 update initially starts as an optional update and is not automatically installed on all Windows 11 computers. The automatic installation of KB5034848 should take place on the next patch day on March 12, 2024. Here's how you can get KB5034848 now:
-
Option 1: You need to select "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" in Windows 11 Update Settings and then check for updates manually so that Windows 11 will show you KB5034848. Install this update.
-
Option 2: Users can download the update directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog here.
New Copilot skills, plugins, keyboard shortcuts and commands
You probably remember that the AI-controlled Copilot was released by Microsoft both as a chatbot and as a kind of control center for controlling your PC. But there were only a small number of actions it could perform, including switching your PC to dark mode. Now there's a whole lot more. They include:
- Switch battery saver on/off
- View device information
- View system information
- View battery information
- Open memory page
- Start live captions
- Start narrator
- Start screen magnifier
- Open the voice control page
- Open the contrast themes page
- Start voice input
- View available Wi-Fi networks
- Show IP address
- View available storage space
These actions are "Copilot skills" and they will be rolled out in late March.
In other words, you can open Copilot and then type “view battery information” to show the Windows Settings page about your PC's battery status. If you don't know where to find this page, this will be helpful.
Copilot will also be moved to the bottom right corner of your PC instead of the taskbar as before. Microsoft has already quietly added a few new task-specific Copilots within Copilot - including a vacation planner, a cooking assistant, and a fitness trainer - and has now officially added plugins from OpenTable to make reservations easier. Shopify, Kayak and Klarna will also be added soon.
Smartphone as a web camera
Originally, this feature wasn't supposed to be available until the new version was released, but Microsoft says it's gradually rolling out this feature to all of its Insider channels. This probably also includes the release preview, so the function should be available soon. Microsoft says you must use the Link to Windows Phone application, version 1.24012 or later, and have an Android phone running Android 9.0 or later.
Photos, Clipchamp get better editing tools
Paint 3D's best feature, Magic Select, is now a feature in Photos. Last year, we hoped that an AI-powered feature to remove objects from a photo would come to the Photos app. What Microsoft calls Generative Erase is rolling out to Photos today, allowing you to erase your copy from a vacation photo and intelligently replace the background.
Nearby sharing and more
Microsoft also introduced some smaller features in another blog post, such as the new ability to share files through your favorite work apps or your personal account and share files faster than before. We already pointed out some of the smaller innovations in our earlier Windows 11 preview of the new moment.
Microsoft is improving Snap Layouts so that it uses AI to better understand what apps you have open and where you would like to place them on your desktop. You'll be able to add more apps like Photos, Paints, WhatsApp, and Messenger, and divide the widgets board into categories for work and play.
