KeePass 2.57 update available

The new version offers improvements and modifications regarding the user interface and features.

The password manager KeePass has been released with version 2.57 with extensive improvements and modifications. The most important new features primarily concern the user interface and the integration of functions. New functions and corrections have also been introduced.

One of the new features in the open source password manager KeePass in version 2.57 is that the option Prevent certain screenshots has been added. In addition, keys can be created on a Secure Desktop. The More button has also been added to the Icon Selection dialog box, which shows a menu with two commands, Rename and Export. Another new option in the user interface is the menu item Remember password hiding setting, which has been added to the main menu.

In KeePass 2.57 databases will always be saved in the KDBX 4/4.1 file format. Furthermore, as an improvement in the software, the maximum length of the main window title has been increased and optimizations or modifications have been made to various parts of the UI text. There is also an improved confirmation text for saving databases.

There are numerous other improvements and that come with the new release. The following changes are mentioned in the Release Notes for KeePass 2.57:

New Features

  • Introduced the Prevent certain screen captures option (found in 'Tools' → 'Options' → 'Security' tab, disabled by default). Note that enabling this option may also prevent legitimate software (such as remote desktop solutions and accessibility tools like screen magnifiers) from viewing KeePass windows.
  • Added the Prevent certain screen captures option to the 'Enforce Options (All Users)' dialog (located in 'Tools' → 'Advanced Tools' → 'Enforce Options').
  • Key files can now be created on the secure desktop.
  • Added shortcut keys for the Copy Group (Encrypted) (Ctrl+Shift+C) and Paste Group (Ctrl+Shift+V) commands.
  • Ctrl+Shift+V can now be used to paste entries while the group tree has the input focus and vice versa.
  • Added a More button in the icon picker dialog, which displays a menu with two commands: Rename and Export. This menu also appears as a context menu for the custom icons list.
  • When importing an icon, the file name (without the extension) is now used as the icon name.
  • Introduced the Remember password hiding setting option in the main window column configuration dialog (disabled by default).
  • Added support for long paths when running on .NET 4.6.2 or higher.
  • Some error messages now include the type and HResult of the exception that occurred.
  • Some error messages are now more detailed when running KeePass with the '-debug' command line option.
  • For Bitwarden JSON import, two-digit years are now converted to four-digit years.
  • Added a UIFlags bit for automatically adjusting weak key transformation settings to the current default values (without a confirmation dialog).
  • Implemented DPI detection on Unix-like systems.
  • For applications using KeePass as a library, a new common initialization method ('CommonInitialize') has been added, allowing for custom error handling/reporting.

Improvements

  • Databases are now always saved in the KDBX 4/4.1 file format. If you need a KDBX 3.1 file for compatibility with an older app, perform an export via the main menu: 'File' → 'Export' → 'KeePass KDBX (2.34, Old Format)'.
  • Auto-Type: improved compatibility with Remote Desktop Client (WSL).
  • In an auto-type error dialog, the sequence is now displayed only if KeePass has been started with the '-debug' command line option.
  • Increased the maximum length of the main window title.
  • Improved handling of shortcut keys in the main window.
  • Enhanced performance of the entry data exchange menu update.
  • After moving a group, KeePass now ensures that the group is visible.
  • Improved text in the database save confirmation dialog.
  • When displaying the master key creation/change dialog on the secure desktop, attempting an unsupported operation now results in a simple error message. Canceling the dialog to perform the operation on the normal desktop is no longer possible, preventing certain accidental data loss scenarios.
  • Various improvements in the simple file browser dialog (for the secure desktop).
  • While a hot key control in the options dialog is focused, dialog-specific keyboard shortcuts are now disabled.
  • Changed the 'MAC Address' password generator profile to always generate a unicast, locally administered MAC address in the SLAP administratively assigned quadrant.
  • In the icon picker dialog, moved the 'Export' command to the 'More' context menu of the custom icons list.
  • When running on .NET 4.7 or higher, KeePass now supports all TLS/SSL protocol versions enabled by the framework/system.
  • Improved error messages for exception chains.
