VueScan 9.8.59: Bigger Scans, Editable OCR, and Brother Fixes

VueScan gives users one consistent interface across more than 6,000 supported scanner models.

VueScan is a long-running third-party scanning application from Hamrick Software that replaces the often-clunky bundled software that comes with flatbed and film scanners, giving users one consistent interface across more than 6,000 supported scanner models.

VueScan talks directly to scanner hardware (bypassing the manufacturer's own driver software in many cases) to deliver consistent scanning, color correction, and file-format support regardless of which scanner brand you own.

What's New in 9.8.59

  • Larger scans — support for scans larger than 2 GB, and resolutions up to 65,535 × 65,535 pixels, for high-resolution archival and large-format work
  • Editable OCR text window — OCR output can now be reviewed and corrected directly in the app, with a new OCR button placed next to Recent Scans
  • Recent Scans tray toggle — an option to enable or disable the Recent Scans tray
  • "Restore fading" filter — a new filter option for multi-slide scans to correct faded color in old film/slide collections
  • Collapsible option sections — related settings can now be collapsed within the same category, tidying up the options panel

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a maximum scan resolution issue on certain Brother scanners, plus ADF (automatic document feeder) problems on some Brother models
  • Corrected paper-size handling specifically for the Brother MFC-9460CDN
  • Fixed the alignment grid repainting incorrectly when rotating crop selections
  • Fixed thumbnail display glitches involving mirroring and skewing
  • Fixed the zoomed Overview view breaking when switching frames
  • Fixed color correction being applied outside the active frame

Platform & Licensing

VueScan runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and supports over 1,500 scanner models directly (with broader compatibility through generic drivers). It's commercial software with free and paid tiers — the free version works fully but watermarks saved images; a paid license removes the watermark and unlocks additional features.

Scanner manufacturers are notorious for dropping driver support for older hardware once a new OS ships, or for shipping bloated, ad-laden scanning suites. VueScan's continued, active development — including OCR refinements and continued bug-fixing for common consumer models like Brother's all-in-ones — keeps years-old scanners usable on current versions of Windows.
