VLC 3.0.24 Released: Security Fixes and an FFmpeg 8.1 Upgrade

The release fixes security issues and replaces VLC's bundled FFmpeg multimedia libraries with a much newer version.

VideoLAN has released VLC media player 3.0.24, the first update to the popular free media player since 3.0.23 in January. The release fixes security issues and replaces VLC's bundled FFmpeg multimedia libraries with a much newer version, so all Windows users should update.

What's New

  • Security fixes: Patches for several vulnerabilities, plus a new RSA-4096 key that VLC uses to verify its own updates.
  • FFmpeg 8.1: VLC now uses FFmpeg 8.1 (up from 4.4), which brings much newer and better codec support.
  • New formats: Adds the APV decoder and Atrac3/Atrac9 audio decoding.
  • Windows startup fix: VLC no longer starts slowly around the daylight-saving time change.
  • Capture: Adds NV12 DirectShow capture on Windows.
  • Better compatibility: Improves compatibility for UWP builds and their runtime.
  • Chromecast: HEVC is disabled for first-generation Chromecast devices.
  • Plugin cleanup: The youtube.lua plugin is removed because it no longer worked.
