What's fixed
The headline fix addresses a crash affecting Windows 11 guests: previously, updating Secure Boot DBX (revocation list) entries inside a Windows 11 VM could trigger a UEFI bug check and force an unexpected reboot of the guest. That's now resolved.
Other changes in this release:
- Windows Host: Fixed clipboard handling of Unicode formats, addressing garbled copy-paste text between host and guest.
- Windows installer: Now detects the Visual C++ runtime through Windows' servicing infrastructure instead of relying solely on registry checks, making the installer more reliable on systems with partial or repaired VC++ installs.
- VMM: Avoided unnecessarily querying/setting the xcr0 register on CPUs without XSAVE support when using Hyper-V as the virtualization engine — relevant to Windows hosts running VirtualBox alongside Hyper-V-based features like WSL2 or Device Guard.
- Linux Host: Added initial support for the upcoming Linux kernel 7.2, so VirtualBox's kernel modules should build cleanly once distros ship it.
- Linux Guest: Fixed compatibility with the updated RHEL 9.8 and 9.9 kernels.
- BIOS: Simplified build requirements — NASM 2.16 or later can now be used for the entire BIOS build, removing an old YASM dependency.
Why it matters
None of these are flashy additions, but the Secure Boot crash fix is worth prioritizing for anyone running Windows 11 as a guest OS, since Windows periodically updates its own DBX revocation list in the background — meaning affected users could hit this bug without doing anything unusual. The Unicode clipboard fix will also be welcome for anyone who regularly copies text between host and guest.
