Update Now: Google Chrome Patches 33 Security Vulnerabilities
This urgent security update closes seven critical vulnerabilities making this one of the more significant security patches in recent months.
Google has released an urgent security update for Chrome, closing 33 vulnerabilities in the stable channel. Seven of them have been rated Critical — the highest severity level — making this one of the more significant security patches in recent months.
What's Fixed
The seven critical flaws are all use-after-free bugs, a class of memory corruption error that lets attackers execute arbitrary code or read sensitive data by accessing memory that has already been freed. The affected components include:
- WebShare
- Digital Credentials
- File Input
- Password Manager
- Web Authentication
The remaining 26 vulnerabilities are rated High. These span a wide range of Chrome internals, including Extensions, WebRTC, and Safe Browsing, with bug types covering heap buffer overflows, out-of-bounds reads, insufficient input validation, and faulty security policy implementations. Several flaws in the Extensions subsystem were tied to inadequate validation of untrusted input.
Why You Should Update Immediately
Google is withholding technical details on most of the vulnerabilities until the majority of users have installed the patch, standard practice to prevent attackers from exploiting the information before it reaches users. Given the critical ratings and the breadth of affected components (including the Password Manager and authentication systems), Chrome users should treat this as a high-priority update.
Updated Versions
The following platform versions have been updated:
Windows and macOS have been updated to versions 149.0.7827.155 and 149.0.7827.156, respectively.
Linux has been updated to version 149.0.7827.155.
Android on the Play Store has been updated to version 150.0.7871.28.
iOS and iPadOS on the App Store have been updated to version 150.0.7871.34.
Chrome should update automatically in the background, but you can trigger it manually by going to Menu → Help → About Google Chrome. Users of other Chromium-based browsers such as Microsoft Edge can expect patched versions to follow in the coming days.
