Following Firefox 150, Mozilla has released the new version of its Thunderbird email client. This version includes improvements to encrypted messages, usability enhancements, and numerous bug fixes. In addition, over 40 security vulnerabilities, some of them critical, have been closed.
New Features for Encrypted Messages and Improved Usability
With the new version, Thunderbird has significantly expanded its handling of encrypted communication. OpenPGP signatures can now be integrated more discreetly. For the first time, both OpenPGP and S/MIME encrypted messages can be searched. Furthermore, the account hub now opens automatically when Thunderbird starts, and address book cards can now be copied directly to the clipboard as vCards.
The developers have also improved the user interface. Calendar views for one month or several weeks are now scrollable on touchscreens, and a custom accent color can be set in the display settings. Similar to Firefox 150, PDF functionality has also been enhanced, allowing pages within documents to be rearranged in the integrated viewer
Bugs fixed
In addition to new features, several bugs have been fixed. Among other things, the update corrects an unintentional change to the Flatpak beta app ID from org.mozilla.Thunderbird to org.mozilla.thunderbird. It also fixes an issue that could cause crashes when creating new folders. Furthermore, the release notes list more than 20 other improvements and adjustments.
Vulnerabilities fixed
A key component of the update is the fix for more than 40 security vulnerabilities, 12 of which are classified as critical. Various components are affected, including Core & HTML, WebRTC, web codes, and Canvas2D. These vulnerabilities could allow attackers to read sensitive data or, in the worst-case scenario, gain complete control over an affected system. Therefore, prompt installation of the update is strongly recommended. A detailed overview is provided in the accompanying security notes.
Available now
Thunderbird 150 and Thunderbird 140.10.0 ESR are now available for download on the Mozilla website. The update can also be initiated via the update function within the email client itself, although most users should have already received a notification about the new version. Android users can access the Google Play Store.
