GIMP 3.2 available

Many new features have been integrated in the new version.

After three release candidates, GIMP 3.2 has been released in its final version. Several new features have been added. A number of new features and changes have been integrated into GIMP 3.2. A new splash screen will greet you, along with UX/UI improvements.

Key New Features

Non-Raster Layers:

Added new link and vector layers alongside text layers, with better protection against accidental destructive edits. You must intentionally rasterize them to modify them destructively. Vector layers now also support drag-and-drop color or pattern fills.

Improved Color Processing:

Filters like Levels, Curves, Equalize, and White Balance now default to linear color precision, improving color accuracy and consistency in both the interface and scripts.

UX / UI Improvements:

  • Welcome dialog behaves smarter when opening images directly.

  • Small interface tweaks (e.g., Hue/Saturation slider order).

  • Flip and Shear tools now support arrow-key controls.

  • Improved behavior for deleting layer masks, cropping with transparency, and color selection.

  • Visual cleanup in dock panels and better handling of oversized dialogs.

  • Initial Global Menu support for Flatpak.

File Format Enhancements:

  • DDS: Added BC7 export support.

  • JPEG2000: Fixed export quality control bug.

  • OpenEXR: Improved luminance/chroma import support.

  • WebP: Fixed issues affecting lossless export quality.

  • Procreate palettes: Can now be imported.

  • Swatchbooker palettes: Improved profile support.

  • XMC: Plugin improvements and safer exports.

Overall GIMP 3.2 focuses on non-destructive editing, better color accuracy, UI refinements, and expanded file format support.
