The latest masterpiece: in its tireless quest to win hearts (and default browser settings), Microsoft has unveiled a bold new strategy, simply launching Edge for you. No need to click anything, no messy consent, no tedious decision-making. After all, why burden users with freedom when convenience can be so… compulsory?
Following the latest totally optional mandatory Windows 11 security update, where over 160 vulnerabilities were patched (one already being actively exploited, just to keep things spicy), Edge now graciously opens itself upon reboot. Think of it as a surprise party, except you did not plan it, did not want it, and ca not cancel it.
According to Windows Latest, this is all in the noble name of informing you about the latest features. Because clearly, what users crave most after a system update is an unsolicited browser presentation. And before you ask, no, there is no cancel button. That would imply choice. You can close Edge, of course, assuming you notice it before it starts explaining itself.
One might naïvely suggest using built-in apps like Get Started or Get Help for such purposes, but where is the fun in that? No, this is about making sure Edge gets its moment in the spotlight, whether invited or not.
The good news? Once you have been properly enlightened, you are indeed free - magnanimously so - to close Edge and return to your browser of choice. Chrome, Firefox, or anything else that has not yet mastered the art of surprise appearances.
Progress, after all, is unstoppable. Especially when it starts automatically.
