Firefox 125 update available

Mozilla closes vulnerabilities and expands the PDF viewer.

In the new Firefox version 125.0.1, the Mozilla developers have fixed a number of vulnerabilities in the browser. You get a new function in the PDF viewer, download protection is improved and playback of DRM-protected AV1 videos is supported. Updates to Firefox ESR 115.10, Tor Browser 13.0.14 and Thunderbird 115.10 are also available.

Firefox 125.0 was available on the Mozilla server for a short time, but due to a bug it was withdrawn and replaced with version 125.0.1. The developers have fixed at least 15 vulnerabilities. Mozilla classifies at least nine vulnerabilities as high risk in the according security report.

Most of these concern the JIT (JIT: just in time) compiler for Javascript. Some vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute injected code. There are currently no known attacks on Firefox users. With the menu entry » Help » About Firefox you can manually initiate an update check and download the update if necessary.

This is new

Mozilla claims on the What's new page that Firefox has become up to 25 percent faster in website loading times compared to the beginning of 2023 (Firefox 109). You can now also highlight text in color in the built-in PDF viewer. However, the new function will only be released gradually - initially only a few Firefox users will receive it.

Support for the modern AV1 codec for DRM-protected videos, for example from streaming services, is already available to everyone. Firefox now blocks downloads from questionable websites in advance. If you copy a URL (web address) to the clipboard (e.g. from a text file) and click in the Firefox address bar, the browser will offer to paste the URL from the clipboard and open it.

Updates for Firefox ESR, Tor Browser, Thunderbird

Firefox ESR 115 is getting an update to version 115.10.0, in which the developers have closed nine gaps. An update is also available for the Firefox ESR-based Tor Browser. The new Tor Browser 13.0.14 (for Windows, macOS, Linux and Android) is based on Firefox 115.10. In the new version 115.10.0 of the Thunderbird mail program, the MZLA developers have at least eliminated those vulnerabilities that Thunderbird inherited from Firefox. They have also fixed a number of bugs.
